Connect to Cardiff - does it work for YOU?

At a meeting in Cardiff recently, it was suggested that a 'one-stop' telephone helpline should be set up for older people who want help, advice or information. Someone pointed out that 'Connect to Cardiff' provides this support in Cardiff and covers all the Council's services. We would love to hear from any of our RSVP members who have used 'Connect to Cardiff' with feedback on how well the service worked for them. If there is any member who lives in the Cardiff area and is looking for information of this kind at the moment, why not give Connect to Cardiff a try and let us know how you get on?
For Connect to Cardiff, telephone 029 20872087. To feedback to us call Joanna on 029 20390477.

We are looking for the services of a special volunteer for publicity promotions in the Cardiff area, which is interesting and rewarding work. Reansport is required for display boards, exhibitions, etc., with travel expenses paid. Flexible time - short term. Please contact the Cardiff office for further information, no obligations, either for yourself or if you know of someone who would be interested.

Knitting News!

Knitting Update

Shirley Brown has now retired from her active and demanding role as Knitting Organiser. We would like to thank Shirley for all the hard work she has given to RSVP over the past five years or more, and wish her all the best for the future.

Shirley's departure leaves a rather large gap to be filled, and we are pleased to be able to announce that Mrs Gina Browning has agreed to help out at the Cardiff office, sorting and storing the knitting as it comes in. However, we are still on the lookout for more volunteers willing to lend a hand with the knitting. In the Cardiff area we are particularly looking for a driver willing to collect knitting on a local level and bring it in to the office. This would not be a regular commitment, but would function on an ad hoc basis, and expenses would be paid for the use of the car.

On a wider level, we are still keen to see small groups of knitters getting together and organising themselves more regularly in their own areas. We also need someone willing to contact our outlets to arrange collection and delivery, and to explore new outlets for the knitted goods. If anyone is interested in finding out more about these volunteering opportunities please contact us. We would love to hear from you.

CSV/RSVP Schools Support Project for the City
and County of Cardiff

The Cardiff School Project celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2003!

RSVP ask volunteers to give a half day per week on a regular basis during term time, and RSVP give them support.

Because the RSVP is in partnership with the Local Education Authority, who provide short training sessions both for literacy and numeracy, an experienced corps has been built of committed members who freely give their time to help raise the standards of the children. Help mainly consists of listening to the children read on a one to one basis, but our members help teachers in many ways.

Schools need more help. Anyone interested who wish for further information please ring Cardiff (029) 20390477                              e-mail:   rsvp@csvwales.freeserve.co.uk.

 Reception at Buckingham Palace
To recognise
The Year of the Volunteer 2005
3rd November 2005

As a servant of the Crown for over 45 years as a Civil Servant with a short break in the Royal Navy, my excitement understandably increased as I went through the Palace Gates.

On arrival outside the Palace the police checked the car and my identity. The reception was held in a suite of rooms to avoid overcrowding. After being given an identity card I was shown into a splendid room, which had two large paintings that I understood to be of the Queen's grandparents, King George 5th and Queen Mary.

The guests were volunteers of all age groups and we were able to circulate within the room and chat to them about their activities. T he Queen entered the room unannounced and slowly moved amongst the guests stopping to say a few words with everyone. She asked me what I did in RSVP and where I had come from.

We were later able to circulate amongst the guests in the other rooms where I met Prince Edward and the Duke of Kent who both asked to what organisation I belonged. Towards the end the Duke of Edinburgh passed and said 'good morning' as he was briskly making his way out.

I thoroughly enjoyed meeting volunteers from all parts of the country, and some from Scotland were dressed in kilts and looked most impressive. I was most impressed with the courtesy and efficiency of the police and Palace staff. But of course it was the welcome given by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh and members of the Royal family that made the event so memorable.

Joining RSVP has made the Third Age exciting for me because I have met so many interesting people and attended several historic events during the past ten years. To mark the opening of the National Assembly of Wales I attended Cardiff Castle in the presence of the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and the Prince of Wales on 26th May 1999.

I wish to thank the many RSVP friends who have encouraged and supported me over the years. But my special thanks to the many committed members past and present who have supported the CSV-RSVP Schools Support Project for the City of Cardiff. It has been my privilege to have been the Organiser of the project for ten years and a great honour for me to represent on this occasion its members and also the many committed RSVP members throughout Wales volunteering in a variety of projects.

ReStart - drivers wanted!

Volunteer drivers wanted for the Ely and Caerau Youth Bus. The ReStart Project needs experienced drivers for occasional sessions on an exciting new Youth bus Project for Cardiff.
If you have 2 years driving experience and feel comfortable in the presence of young people, this could be the perfect opportunity for you. The Bus visits Ely and Caerau three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during which times it is driven by one of our Youth Workers. However additional sessions would be held during the daytime in school holiday and some weekends and we are looking for drivers to help cover these sessions. All you need is a standard driver's licence as full training is given by Cardiff Bus, so if you are interested please contact ReStart on 029-20871260 or 07730 804508.

A Note from Norman

Dear Member,
You could help increase our volunteer organisation if each and every one of our members would advise your local organiser by telephone, letter, internet (www.csv-rsvp-wales.org) etc. of just one of your friends or family who would show an interest in being an active member of the RSVP and receive information from us. We just need their name, address, telephone number and whether we can say that you recommended them to the RSVP. There is no obligation on either yours or their part. This could help us double our membership in a short time. Let's do it!
You have a part to play in it.
Best of luck,

Regards
Norman Jones
